n the centenary year of the Russian Revolution, this public lecture explores the legacy of Soviet cinema, and how subsequent filmmakers have sought to create a cinema that combines social commitment with formal innovation. In particular, this illustrated talk will discuss the work of revolutionary Cuban filmmaker Santiago álvarez, and speculate on the future of political cinema in a world increasingly dominated by confusion and authoritarianism.
