Gary A. Boyd is Reader in Architecture at Queen’s University, Belfast and Head of Architecture. Graduating from the University of Strathclyde in 1997, he took academic posts in University College, Dublin and University College, Cork, before joining Queen’s in September 2013.

His first book Hospital, Spectacle and Vice: Dublin 1745-1922 (Four Courts 2005) explored the influence of medicine, particularly obstetrics, on the development of social life, architecture and urban form in the early modern city. Ordnance: War + Architecture & Space (co-edited with Denis Linehan) (Ashgate 2013) looked at how strategies of warfare occupy and alter built and other landscapes.

He was appointed joint-curator/commissioner (with John McLaughlin) of the Irish Pavilion, for the 14th Architecture Biennale, Venice 2014. Another book, Infra-Éireann: Infrastructure and the Architectures of Modernism in Ireland 1916-2016 (Ashgate 2015)(co-edited with John McLaughlin) emerged from the research undertaken for the Venice project. It traces the impact of modern infrastructure on the cultural and architectural identity and development of the Irish State.

Boyd is currently joint-commissioner/curator for Making Ireland Modern, a major exhibition touring the Republic of Ireland in 2016 as one of the key strands in the Irish Arts Council's 1916-2016 cultural programme.

Other research interests include the design of housing, prefabrication in architecture, curation and the representations of architecture, aspects of designed urbanity, and the architectures of industry and other forms of production.
