11th Concrete Design Competition

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

I hosted Dr Eanna Nolan from Irish Cement at QUB on 16 April 2024, representing the 11th Concrete Design Competition. The visit formed part of my leadership of the climate emergency lecture strand across Undergraduate and MArch Technology and Environment modules.

The session introduced students to the International Concrete Design Competition and supported critical engagement with concrete and cement in the context of decarbonisation, embodied carbon, limited resources, material efficiency, durability, reuse and responsible specification. It presented the students with an incentivised opportunity to examine the environmental challenges associated with a carbon-intensive construction material, while also engaging with current industry-facing discussion on decarbonisation and material transformation.

The activity contributed to external engagement, industry-facing teaching and critical material literacy within architectural technology education.
