A Design and Feasibility Study for the “Grief Portal”: A Conversational Support Agent for Individuals Bereaved by Prostate Cancer

Description

This doctoral research project will be supervised by Professor Mark Shevlin (UU), Dr Enya
Redican (UU) and Dr Michael Duffy (QUB).
Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed, and leading cause of
cancer-related death, among men in the UK. In Northern Ireland
(NI) alone more than 2,500 individuals are bereaved by prostate
cancer each year and are at elevated risks of mental health
problems. Despite this, there are currently limited and
fragmented support pathways and existing care services are
often experienced as insufficient or difficult to access. Digital
mental health solutions can be effective, scalable and acceptable
but there is no single resource that can provide tailored support
for people bereaved by prostate cancer. This doctoral project
aims to provide the necessary research evidence required to
develop such a resource. It will design and assess the feasibility
of the “Grief Portal”, a conversational, web-based platform to
identify levels of post-bereavement distress and triage users to
appropriate, evidence-informed mental health resources
