A Medieval Evening - Journeying Beyond Westeros

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

The event was organised as part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project - Journeying Beyond Westeros. This sought to enliven and reinvigorate the public's understanding of the Medieval period in Northern Ireland, utilising the region's existing associations with HBO's Game of Thrones as a means of better
publicising our heritage for local people and tourists, in similar fashion to what has been achieved in Dubrovnik in Croatia, also a filming location for the tv series. We have a wealth of historic monuments belonging to the period, we have historical source material, and we have the results of archaeological
investigations, all of which can be utilised to construct a province-wide narrative that highlights our own remarkable, yet largely hidden, Medieval past and the interaction between our region's twelve lordships while setting their activities within their contemporary European context. The event was focused on communicating that story to the local community, and "new" European immigrants.
