Description

The agriculture sector is under increasing pressure as it tries to feed a growing population. The sector is facing growing competition and scarcity of land, water & energy for food production. This is expected to be exacerbated by climate change. Simultaneously, agriculture contributes a third of GHG emissions. Agricultural practices are being challenged through changes in government policy; and consumer demand and distribution. In addition, agriculture is failing to support a decent standard of living for farmers, with the majority focusing on short term productivity and survival. The sector's resiliency & ability to respond to unpredictable changes in the environment & market-place are sub-optimal. The role of digital technology in providing farmers with the opportunity to address sustainability challenges, make informed decisions and increase productivity & profitability has been well documented but this hasn’t translated into behavioural change. There is an urgent need to design targeted approaches which drives the adoption of digital technologies; and creates a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system. The AgTech European Farmers Academy will combine education and collaboration to allow the sector to learn, discuss and share experiences of applying digital technologies for sustainable agriculture; and collaboratively build a strategy to drive technology adoption & productivity. The academy will include online education materials, interactive workshops, round table discussions, mentoring and networking events. The collaborative approach will allow learning from the best available data and expertise to address knowledge and skills gaps & resolve the barriers to sustainable agriculture; whilst allowing participants to build a strong regional and European network. These farm ambassadors will be empowered to become change agents, driving the adoption of digital technologies The academy will also offer a unique opportunity for Women in Agriculture.
