Andrea Dempster Chung Co-Founder & Executive Director, Kingston Creative
Much of the discourse of audiences draws from Western approaches to build and retain existing audiences while giving attention to new, more diverse and emerging audiences for cultural work. In this talk, Andrea Dempster Chung will draw on her experience in Kingston Creative of the realities and priorities of developing audiences in downtown Kingston; considering what is meant by audience for contemporary non-Western cultural organisations. Kingston Creative is a NGO whose mission is to transform Downtown Kingston through the arts.
In addition to her role at Kingston Creative, Andrea Dempster Chung is also the founder of Bookophilia, a bookstore and cafe that promotes Caribbean authors. She led the Arts portfolio for the British Council in Jamaica, where she developed strategy and implemented key projects in film, literature and visual art. Andrea has held senior roles in strategy development and project management within the Government of Jamaica, Digicel and GraceKennedy and has served on the boards of Jamaica Social Investment Fund, The National Land Agency and the Public Health Committee. She has coached creative entrepreneurs in several programmes including the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship. She holds a MSc in Structural Engineering, a Prince2 Certification in Project Management and a BSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She studied Art & Finance at the Sotheby’s School of Art in London and Finance at the Stanford School of Business in California. She was featured in Forbes in 2019 as one of 10 women leading the charge for a sustainable future for Jamaica.
