The Irish dramatist, Brian Friel drew inspiration from both the east and west of Ireland. It was fascinated by the plays of Chekhov and Turgenev some of which he translated into English. And he was also influenced by American dramatists such as Miller and Williams. Drawing on the experience of directing work by Miller, and Friel, in this talk David Grant will reflect on the way in which all threes playwrights explore the nature of memory in Millers's 'Death of a Salesman', Williams' 'The Glass Menagerie' and Friel's 'Dancing at Lughnasa'. He will also refer to 'Aristocrats', Friel 's homage to Anton Chekhov.
