International Workshop: Can the record be trusted? Prospects and Challenges of Human Rights Documentation and Archiving in the Digital Age

Digital documentation of human rights (HR) violations is rapidly developing and used in juridical accountability processes. A massive quantity and diversity of data is collected by a variety of actors, old and new, involving analogue and digital technological processes. However, it is pressing to know to what extent digitalization changes the norms and forms of knowledge production about current HR violations to safeguard not only the validity and integrity of digital fact-finding but also the safety of citizens, journalists, archivists and HR activists. We therefore want to work towards the development of the BELFAST PRINCIPLES, detailing the challenges and prospects of digitalization in HR documentation, archiving and accountability processes. We seek to develop its first elements through a two-day expert workshop with two inter-related objectives:
1) The mapping of processes and actors in digital fact-finding
2) Identification of challenges of digital HR documentation in the production of archival knowledge.
