A phase III multicentre randomised clinical trial comparing standard surgery with minimally-invasive vacuum-assisted excision for small screen-detected breast cancers. This study will recruit 800 women with screen-detected breast cancer over a 4 year period, and follow them up for 5 years to assess outcomes. This novel and innovative trial will potentially result in significant changes in the treatment of these patients, and could have significant economic benefits for the NHS by avoiding surgical treatment. I am the Chief Investigator of this important UK national clinical trial, funded by a £2.3M grant from the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment Programme
