Description
The relationship between Modernism and the city is well established. Throughout the twentieth century, the metropolis provided an important source of inspiration for Modernist artists, architects, writers, and filmmakers.
Co-organised by scholars at the University of York and Fudan University in Shanghai, this conference asks: 100 years after the birth of modernism, how can we forge new connections between Modernism and the city? Drawing together researchers from literature, art history, architecture, and others, this interdisciplinary and international conference shifts the emphasis away from the western megalopolis, focusing on urban centres around the globe, while expanding conventional understandings of the words ‘modernism’ and ‘city’ to bring new meaning to these long-associated terms.
