Community Youth Programme and Public Performance: 'Fusion'
Between September 2015 and March 2016, QUB Ethnomusicology researchers and tutors collaborated with Springboard Opportunities Limited on ‘Fusion’, a quarter-of-a-million-funded project by the NI Executive United Youth Programme (£250K). As part of this effort, Dr Ioannis Tsioulakis and tutors Dr Evi Patsiaoura and Jonathan Gregory directed world-music workshops which recruited young men and women from Shankill and Falls parade bands to perform diverse music together. In the course of the programme, the twenty-four participants from republican and loyalist communities have been jointly practising music, traveling, receiving professional training, and reflecting about their mutual histories. The final showcase took place in a packed Whitla Hall, and was attended by numerous members of both local communities as well as distinguished guests including the Minister for Employment and Learning, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, and members of the NI Assembly.
