Dr Corine Verhoeven is Senior Researcher and Midwife, Midwifery Science, AVAG, Amsterdam Public Health Research Institute, VU Medical Centre Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Dr Verheven visited the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast to undertake a Short Term Scientific Mission as part of the COST Action IS1405 - Building Intrapartum Research Through Health - an interdisciplinary whole system approach to understanding and contextualising physiological labour and birth (BIRTH). The visit was hosted by Dr Maria Healy and supported by Professor Donna Fitzsimons. The aim of STSM was to learn about the organisation and provision of midwife-led care in the alongside and freestanding midwife-led units (MLUs) across Northern Ireland. To visit MLUs, examine the role, responsibilities, along with the education of midwives working in the MLUs. The STSM also enabled the progression of a systematic review entitled: Is there variation among midwives nationally and internationally in their practice of caring for a woman during physiological labour and birth? which Dr Maria Healy, Dr Corine Verheven, Dr Dale Spence and Dr Viola Nyman are currently undertaking.
