Description

We are pleased to announce that the CJRC, in partnership with the European Society of Criminology Working Group on the Collateral Consequences of Criminal Records, are launching a special issue of Probation Journal on the theme ‘Criminalisation, criminal records and rehabilitation: from supervision to citizenship?’

The special issue explores the extent to which the acquisition of a criminal record is compatible with the successful transition of people who have been subject to criminal sanctions from ‘supervised subjects’ into ‘citizens of equal merit’. It includes contributions which explore the:

anticipation of future citizenship amongst men preparing for post-prison life;
various enablers and barriers encountered by people with criminal records when seeking, starting, and sustaining employment;
difficulties faced by ‘veteran offenders’ and the complex ‘dance of disclosure’ which they must negotiate in relation to both their military service and criminal records during life after punishment;
role of criminal background checks in admissions to social work education programmes;
extent to which criminal records can restrict access to statutory compensation schemes designed to support those who have been victims of serious crime; and
role of the Probation Service in promoting social inclusion and desistance in the context of myriad barriers faced by people with criminal records.
The launch will include a seminar with contributions from:

Professor Nicola Carr, Editor-in-Chief of Probation Journal
Angela Cairns, Chief Executive of Unlock
Dr Alessandro Corda, Co-Chair of the European Society of Criminology Working Group on Collateral Consequences of Criminal Records
Dr Andrew Henley, Guest Editor of the Special Issue
The seminar will be followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session with the contributors to the special issue including Caroline Bald, Dr Lauren Bradford-Clarke, Professor Rob Canton, Dr Abi Stark and Dr Hannah Wilkinson.
