Description

The current turmoil regarding present and previous Garda Commissioners can be seen in the context of previous Commissioners who also came into conflict with the state. Eoin O’Duffy, the second Garda Commissioner, was dismissed from his post in 1933 by Eamonn de Valera; and others, including Eamonn Coogan in 1936 and Ned Garvey in 1978, were also dismissed by the governments of the day.

Chaired by Catriona Crowe, this discussion will put the current controversies in context while learning about the state’s often fractious relationship with its police force. Speakers include Fearghal McGarry, Professor of Irish History at Queen’s University, Belfast; and Diarmaid Ferriter, Professor of Modern Irish History at University College, Dublin.
