Description
Who, if anyone, is responsible for ensuring arts organisations do the ‘right thing’ in a ‘good’ way and how is it determined? Attention mostoften turns to those who lead them – the management and boards. Yet managerial and business ethics as theoretical fields have rarely been
applied to the study of arts and cultural organisations or their management. This talk explores the first stage of a pan-sector study on the
ethical decision-making and rationalities of artistic and executive leads of non-profit arts organisations undertaken in 2022–2024.
Unpacking the findings of a literature review, analysis of values statements and primary interviews, Ali FitzGibbon will explain the structural
inhibitions around ideals of shared decision-making, collectivism and ethicality and the approaches taken by managers to realise their
perceived way of ‘doing the right thing’.
