Description
Colleagues and I at Queen’s University Belfast served as advisors on the Elasmobranch Conservation Strategy for Northern Ireland, contributing expertise to the development of a comprehensive framework for the protection of sharks, skates, and rays. Our involvement in the Elasmobranch Conservation Strategy Working Group, facilitated by DAERA, helped shape key objectives aimed at addressing population declines, mitigating threats, and improving long-term conservation outcomes. Through workshops, stakeholder engagement, and scientific review, we provided input on species prioritisation, evidence gaps, and policy recommendations. This collaborative, co-design approach ensures that conservation measures align with global biodiversity targets, UK Marine Strategy goals, and local ecological needs, while also fostering sustainable management practices. The strategy enhances Northern Ireland’s role in marine biodiversity protection and supports the wider societal value of elasmobranchs, including their importance for ecotourism, fisheries sustainability, and ecosystem resilience.Period | Mar 2023 → … |
