Activity: Talk or presentation types › Invited or keynote talk at national or international conference
Description
Contemporary English language classrooms across the world interact with the local and global in many and different ways. In this keynote presentation I discuss the multiple interpretations of “global perspectives” in the field of English Language teaching and consider the extent to which the potential for the development of 21st century skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity are/can be embedded therein. From a critical perspective, I suggest that the traditional telementational views of communication (and culture) which are bound by metaphors of ‘exchange’ limit the potential of a ‘fit-for-purpose’ twenty-first century EFL education, and ELT in general. Drawing on my experience as an educator in an international partnership study abroad capacity building programme (see Tsukazaki et al, 2021), I illustrate how new cultural experiences, programmes of purposeful English language education, and preparation for global volunteering activities facilitated opportunities for the development of communication skills, female empowerment and leadership.
