Enhancing Student Engagement Using TurningPoint

Activity: Participating in or organising an event types › Participation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

This session introduced staff to TurningPoint as an audience response system for live polling and interaction. The workshop was led by Dr Matt Birch and targeted staff seeking to increase engagement in large-group teaching contexts.

Participants explored pedagogical strategies for embedding polling into teaching sessions, using data to inform discussion and adapt teaching in real time. The session emphasised purposeful use rather than tool-driven adoption.

The activity supported QUB strategic goals for Education and Skills and Technology, aligning with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).

This workshop formed part of a highly successful Canvas VLE Rollout Programme in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and beyond in 2018–2019, which led to Dr Matt Birch receiving an Outstanding Leadership Award at the Queen’s University Staff Excellence Awards.
