This international project delivered education to approximately 70 students, 10 of whom were final-year nursing students on the BSc Professional Nursing programme of studies at Queen’s University Belfast. Alongside our 10 Northern Ireland nursing students, 60 students from other professional backgrounds who work with children and young persons with intellectual and development disabilities from seven international universities (Belfast, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Scotland, England) came together for a week-long intensive education programme. As one of the key organisers, we coordinated the travel of students and staff to the University of Oradea in March 2020.
As part of this intensive, we delivered, facilitated and support students and peers to understanding and share knowledge on the cultural context of children with IDD and issues surrounding their social inclusion and participation. This inter-disciplinary and inter-professional character of the project was also innovative as projects that involve student teachers, student nurses and social care educators work and deliver education together. This project also involved parents and practitioners in the delivery . However, this week-long programme had to be cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic with all participants returning home and overnight we led on developing a plan for remote teaching and learning with our other international HEI colleagues.
