Description
ESRC funded Festival of Social Science (FOSS) Event titled ‘How do Urban Green Spaces play a role in shaping Sustainable Cities?’Cities are the nexus of human development and growth. They are also at the forefront of climate change action. The UN Sustainable Goals guide us to make our cities inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. Nature and communities are catalysing this transformation for a better urban future. The main goal of the event was to discuss the role of Urban Green Spaces in shaping our sustainable cities. The focus is on the cluster of three research projects Groundswell, SPACE and UPSURGE to reflect on the future of green spaces in urban environments.
The projects Groundswell & UPSURGE provide pathways to co-design and implement Nature Based Solutions with multiple benefits. The UPSURGE research dives into rising trends of extreme events and highlights the potential for NBS to address climate inequality. The SPACE researchers underline that the cognitive health is lacking from policy agenda. The Geoportal and factsheets developed help in addressing the root cause of poor-quality environments. The Groundswell researchers have developed evidence gap map to highlight the research gaps in blue and green spaces. Exemplary examples of inclusive beach, agroecology community garden, Connswater greenway were showcased. Overall, the importance of investing in natural environment to address climate change and improve resilience is highlighted.
