Presentation on the sharp confrontation between female ex-slaves and their former masters and mistresses over the freedom to wear clothing which whites regarded as 'inappropriate' for Blacks. Discussion grounded in history of sumptuary laws, wider contest over the meaning of freedom, the particular challenges faced by Black women in the post-emancipation public sphere.
