Description
I was the main organizer for the "Gruelling Ordeals: 1850-1950" event, held at the Duncairn Centre for Culture and Arts in Belfast. This was a unique public event which offered participants an immersive encounter with the diets of the Belfast’s poorest inhabitants over 100 years ago. Participants had a slice of workhouse life by sampling the meals served to inmates and comparing them with the rich diets of Belfast’s middle-classes. The recreated meals were followed by a short programme of talks by leading Belfast-based nutritionists, social scientists and historians, who focused on the topic of diet, health and medicine in working-class lives.
