Description

Dr Helen Cleak is an Associate Professor/Visiting Fellow at Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane) and was formerly the Director of international student social work placements and admissions at La Trobe University, Melbourne.
Dr Cleak undertook a sabbatical at our School in 2015 to collaborate on research in relation to practice learning with social work students at both QUB and UU. This work was presented at the Practice Learning conference in The Europa Hotel (April 2016), and resulted in two publications as outlined below.
This study was then replicated in collaboration with colleagues in University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and NUI Galway. The preliminary findings were presented at two conferences this year (Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development and the 12th International Conference on Practice Teaching and Field Education for Health and Social Work). The qualitative data collated from five participating universities across Ireland is being analysed for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.
Following the oral presentation at the Joint World Conference on Social Work in Dublin, we are now in consultation with SW academics in Finland, who wish to explore translating the questionnaire for distribution to their Bachelors and Masters students.
