Helping Kids! Promoting Children’s Inclusive Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (IRC New Foundations Award) (Event)

Activity: Membership typesMembership of national or international committees and working groups

Description

I am an invited member of the Local Advisory Board for this project, as a board member of the MME ThinkTank.

The project focuses on the next generation of peacebuilders, rooted in a decade of community-based research in Northern Ireland (NI) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI). We study helping behaviours across geographic regions (North/South), nationalities (British/Irish), religious groups (Catholic/Protestant) and ethnic minorities (Irish Travellers/Refugees). Working with children ages 6 to 11 years old, we use innovative methods, such as drawings and interactive games, to understand how family transmission influences when and why children help others. We argue that children helping and sharing across groups lines is an antecedent of peacebuilding, and that recognising children’s agency is key to deeper reconciliation.

The project is lead by Dr Laura K Taylor (Assistant Professor, University College Dublin) with Ms Dearbhaile Counihan as research assistant. A number of local organisations have partnered for this project.
