Description
I was invited as Keynote Speaker by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service at the conference themed “Rethinking Social Work: Conference on Empowerment and Advocacy Practice” in March 2020 in Hong Kong. This conference was aimed at enhancing the advocacy capacity of local social workers and welfare agencies and was particularly important in the aftermath of Hong Kong's recent period of protests, civil unrest and political conflict. As a result of such societal upheaval, the role of social workers would also be impacted. In recognition of my expertise in this area, having led research in Northern Ireland addressing social workers' experiences of working throughout the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland, I was invited as Keynote Speaker. The target audience was frontline social workers and managers from the welfare agencies in Hong Kong. Unfortunately I had to decline this invitation to this international event as it clashed with another Keynote invitation in the United States.
