How Paramilitaries End: Lessons from Academia and Practice

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

The How Paramilitaries End workshop focuses on the transition of militant groups from war to peace. Paramilitaries often act as spoilers or remain socially and politically entrenched in post-conflict societies, sometimes long after conflicts nominally end. Workshop participants will focus on mechanisms of their dismantlement, transformation, or reintegration. These processes are crucial because paramilitaries can have important impacts in post-conflict society. Indeed, their continued presence may lead to persistent violence, criminality, coercive control, and, ultimately, the return to war. The workshop seeks to identify common structural challenges, successful outcomes, and emerging trends. It will (1) foster academic collaboration and (2) create links from academia to policymakers and practitioners in Northern Ireland.
