Description

There is no best way to describe "how to do research" since it is related to exploring unknowns and pursuing a novel idea despite uncertainties. In fact, the answers to "how to do research" vary from discipline to discipline and from researcher to researcher. Therefore, it is usually full of mysteries about research activities and lack of a clear pathway to achieve desired research results.

The goal of this course is to introduce 1st-/2nd-year Ph.D. students some common knowledge and background information about research. Firstly, five common questions are raised and discussed in order to demystify research. Secondly, the scientific paper, one of the most critical components of research, is explained as the “protocol” for communicating between authors and reviewers/readers. Several hands-on suggestions are given for reading and writing scientific papers effectively and efficiently. Thirdly, several typical questions asked by previous students are also discussed in details. Last but certainly not least, a practical session of note-taking in paper reading is also included.

This is the second-round delivery of this mini-course. The first course delivered in 2017 and has achieved great success with 100% satisfactory according to the course feedback.
