Description
Everyday streets are at the core of urban life, they sustain a complex mix of activities, different types of people and histories of generations that walked, lived and played in them. These streets have often been taken for granted and many have been transformed or disappeared as a consequence of planning decisions. Resident communities feel a sense of belonging to those streets, and value them as part of their everyday life and their meaningful memories.StreetSpace studio is once again a collaborative yearlong project. MArch students are working in the area of the Market in Belfast to understand the significance and value of its streets and people, and deal with the problems and potentials of vacancy, dereliction and density, especially focusing on future housing and mixed use potential of the neighbourhood. We collaborate with the Department for Communities, Belfast City Council and the Market Development Association to highlight the priorities for this area and deal with real possibilities of regeneration and transformation while respecting the existing social and physical fabric of the streets studied.
In this workshop we will engage with residents of the Market to discuss the past, present and future of the neighbourhood, especially considering the potential of vacant sites to provide better housing and services needed by the community. We will use maps and walkabouts to discuss what types of buildings and spaces are needed in the neighbourhood and how a group of architecture students can make them visible.
If you want to participate we invite you to bring photographs of your past and ideas for the future.
