Afghanistan and the girlhood gap: Analysing writing by young women in Afghanistan, carried out as part of the Afghan Women's Writing Project, and through recorded interviews with Afghan women writers, I discuss how their work relates to notions of girlhood. I discuss how many young Afghan women writers appear to have willingly relinquished their 'girlhood' in order to write the stories of the millions of illiterate and powerless women in the country, using their writing to take on the role of 'mother' to those women
