IFAA recommendations for the ethical use of anatomical images, published in Anatomical Sciences Education Journal, Oct 2023

Description

I co-led the development of these recommendations as I am the Sole UK member of the Federative International Committee for Ethics in the Medical Humanities (FICEM) of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). These recommendations are also published on the IFAA website and were sent to all anatomical associations around the globe.

These guidelines were developed over a period of eight months. They provide useful guidance to anatomists in an area which is requiring further scrutiny and was often overlooked. There has been a requirement to address the increasing influence of digital and novel technologies in respect to ethics and ethical issues.

After a long process of discussions, the American Association for Anatomy has recently adopted recommendations regarding ethical treatment of legacy anatomical collections. They have been published in the Anatomical Record and are freely available under this DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/ar.25410.These are of course recommendations primarily catering for the United States.
