Description
Design and delivery along with Marina Lazëri (PhD candidate Becoming a Minority (BaM) project, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) of a workshop on blogging, title:How to write for general audiences -practical workshop.Writing for a general audience is becoming an increasingly necessary tool that an academic should have in their professional and ethical baggage. Whether it is promoted as an activity that will enhance the ‘impact’ of research, and thus attract funding support and professional accomplishment, or experienced as an ethical urge by the researcher to engage with the public, ‘blogging’ usually emerges as an urgency. Yet, blogging can be more challenging than one first imagines it to be. Those who have actually attempted blogging can testify for the
challenges it involves, while those who think of doing it, may stand still due to the intimidating vagueness of the process. As Early Career Researchers focusing on migration, writing for a general audience emerges as a no-brainer for all the reasons above, as well as the passion to bring upon positive change, and give back to the people with whom we work.
This workshop aims at providing insights into blogging among peers, and making the blogging process more tangible. As PhD candidates who have engaged with publishing blog- pieces either as authors, or as editors, we aim at sharing the experience that we have acquired, structured in core-principles and rules of thumb. Join us in a session that connects formal guidelines with reflections on actual experience, run by peers for peers, and get feedback on your own sample work.
The session aims at familiarizing participants with the challenges and the rewards that characterize writing for a general audience. We will look at publishing blogs as an act that contributes to engaging with communities.
The workshop addresses in particular the qualities of a blog-piece that facilitate effective engagement with a broad readership, as well as suitable formats and structures.
Participants are encouraged to send us a 200-word pitch for a blog-piece to receive focused feedback, no later than 25 June.
