Description

I am a founding member of the Inter-Agency Childcare and Legal Issues Group which aims to facilitate understanding and information exchange on legal issues between lawyers, social workers and relevant stakeholders in respect of childcare legislation, policy and practice in Northern Ireland. The group brings together representatives from NIGALA, The Bar of Northern Ireland, The Fostering Network, Adoption UK, VOYPIC, The Children's Law Centre, the Health and Social Care Board, and myself as the representative of Queens University. The activities of the group are to: consider and comment on legal / social issues; assist professionals in keeping up to date with research, case law and legislation; host seminars and relevant training events; promote best practice and inter-disciplinary working.
The group organises two seminars a year for approximately 120 social workers, solicitors, barristers and members of the judiciary. Seminars are focused on topical issues in contemporary child welfare at the interface of legal and social work practice. Each seminar includes input from an invited panel of speakers with legal, social work and service user expertise.
