Conference ThemeThe general theme of the conference is ‘Access to Justice’.
The parallel sessions will begin on Friday 21st November afternoon.
The Plenary session will be on Saturday 22nd November in the form of a moderated panel discussion on the theme of the conference. Speakers for the plenary include Dr Tara Mulqeen (focusing on social justice-related experiential learning and community-engaged research) and Dr Ciara Fitzpatrick (examining social security law and policy and more specifically how social security policies impact the lives of women and children).
Dr Mulqueen’s is the Co-Director of Warwick Law in the Community (LinC), the Law School’s programme of social justice-related experiential learning and community-engaged research. Her recent project Understanding Local Legal Needs: Early Intervention and the Ecosystem of Legal Support, in collaboration with Advicenow and the Central England Law Centre, focuses on lived experience of marginalised communities and the role of trusted intermediaries in supporting access to justice. She also teaches the innovative Public Legal Education and Social Welfare Law modules at WLS, which partner with local organisations to deliver projects that support understanding of and access to social welfare law.
Dr Fitzpatrick is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Ulster University. Her area of research is social security law and policy and more specifically how social security policies impact the lives of women and children. Ciara is an ardent social justice advocate and is passionate about using research to effect social change. She is currently a UK member of the UK wide Expert Reference Group on Child Poverty which has been set up to ‘be an independent sounding board to provide advice and scrutiny on the analysis underpinning the development of the Government’s Child Poverty Strategy’. She is also a member of ARK, Northern Ireland’s Social Policy Hub, which was stablished in 2000 by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. Its primary goal is to increase the accessibility and use of academic data and research.
