In 2016, Dr Matt Birch engaged in and led School-level contributions to the Jisc Developing Digital Literacies: Institutional Audit Project, a University-wide baselining exercise coordinated by the Centre for Educational Development. The initiative aimed to map existing practice, capacity, and strategic priorities relating to digital capability for staff and students across Queen’s University Belfast.
Dr Birch was invited to contribute to Section 7 – Special Projects or Initiatives of the Jisc audit tool, collating examples of digital learning activities within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and liaising with colleagues to ensure an accurate representation of ongoing work. This included documenting projects such as the Mediasite video feedback initiative and other technology-enhanced assessment practices, and coordinating input from academic partners including Jennifer McGaughey and Paddy Haughian.
The activity supported institutional reflection on how digital literacies were being developed, resourced, and embedded within curricula, professional development, and support services. By contributing School-specific evidence to the audit, Dr Birch helped inform University planning around digital capability frameworks, staff development priorities, and the strategic use of learning technologies.
This work aligned with Queen’s University Belfast priorities relating to digital transformation and enhancement of teaching practice, and supported SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the promotion of digitally confident staff and inclusive learning experiences.
