The invitation to speak at this conference was another one that had its origins in the interest created by my book Credit and community: working class debt in the UK since 1880 (Oxford University Press, 2009). The conference was held at Maison Sugar and supported by Institute Universitaire de France. My paper was 'The female consumer, credit and consumer protection in post-war Britain'. All my expenses were paid by the conference organisers.
