Description

Digital Serious Games to promote awareness on Dementia.
Digital gaming or ‘gamification’ is becoming an increasingly common way to educate healthcare professionals and the public about a range of healthcare topics. A digital game is also a creative way to challenge people’s thinking that may promote positive societal change. To our knowledge, the Dementia Game was the first game aimed at improving attitudes towards people with dementia that was coproduced with people living with dementia and university students. We engaged Dementia NI, an empowerment organisation led by people with dementia for people with dementia and nursing students from the School of Nursing and Midwifery who had undertaken the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends training. The game is available: www.dementiagame.com. Over 1000 people played the game and 500 completed the pre/post questionnaire demonstrating a statically significant improvement in attitudes towards dementia. We have now co-designed a Kids Dementia Game with Dementia NI and children nursing students working with Primary 6 school children. Children have evaluated the game positively. The game is available: kids.dementiagame.com.
