Description
Recognising the need to unify and future-proof marine research and teaching at Queen’s University Belfast, we have taken strategic steps to establish a working group that brings together QUB’s dispersed marine expertise. This initiative began with an Interfaculty Marine Meeting in 2023, which highlighted both the university’s strengths and the challenges of fragmented capacity. Following this, engagement with senior leadership led to the development of a five-year strategy to enhance marine teaching and research.A major milestone in this effort is the proposal for QUB MARINERS (Marine Advisory Research & Innovation Network for Education and Real-World Solutions)—a formal working group designed to foster cross-faculty collaboration, align research with industry and government needs, and ensure that marine teaching at QUB remains competitive and relevant. A MARINERS Implementation Group (MIG) will follow, tasked with identifying research synergies, teaching gaps, and the feasibility of a cross-faculty marine programme.
By establishing this network, we are not only strengthening internal collaboration but also ensuring that QUB remains at the forefront of marine science education and research. This initiative demonstrates leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to enhancing institutional capacity—key indicators of academic citizenship and impact, aligning with promotion criteria.
