Practice-focused Virtual Masterclass, 06th December 2023.Learning Objectives
This event will offer students the opportunity to contextualise and consolidate academic learning about behaviour, mental health, and forensic healthcare for people with learning disabilities. Expert speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds will offer students a unique insight into the experiences and support needs of people with learning disabilities who transition through the Criminal Justice System. By understanding how approaches in assessment, care, safeguarding and multi-agency working are applied in the practice setting, students will be able identify key clinical priorities associated with the learning disability nursing role within secure settings and the community.

09:30: 'Think COULD': Supporting the Needs of People with Learning Disabilities in Police Custody.
Craig Bell is a Learning Disability Nurse and Queens Nurse in NHS Forth Valley, Scotland. He currently manages a community crisis and forensic linked service called ‘The Additional Support Team’. Craig played an instrumental role in developing ‘Think COULD’, a forensic project which created a video that has been used to inform and promote the needs of people with learning disabilities within police custody, whilst also ensuring individuals with learning disabilities have fair access to criminal justice services.
10:15: Mick Lambert: Police Custody and Court diversion/Liaison
Mick works with the criminal justice system for West Yorkshire Liaison and Diversion where he has been able to develop a pathway to support those with learning disabilities (and other neurodiverse needs) and their carers to navigate the criminal justice system, as well as educating criminal justice professionals and raising their awareness of learning disabilities. Mick has been involved in a number of local and national projects including working with regional NHS ICBs and with Vicky Sandy-Davis on the SOLDA website project. He is currently working on a newly funded project to develop an online safety educational website specifically for adults with learning disabilities and autism.

11:15: Olivia Ward: Supporting Neurodiversity in Prison Custody
Olivia is Lead Occupational Therapist and Wellbeing Centre Manager for HMP Pentonville. She has played an instrumental role in setting up and delivering Pentonville’s Neurodiversity Unit. The unit plays an important role in supporting people with learning disabilities within the complex prison estate.

13:00: Dr Magali Barnoux: Offenders with intellectual disabilities in prison - what happens when they leave?
Dr Barnoux is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology and IDD and BPS Chartered Psychologist at the Tizard Centre, University of Kent. Dr Barnoux’s research focuses on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have come into contact with the Criminal Justice System as victims, witnesses, and/or perpetrators of crime. She has conducted applied research projects across a range of forensic settings (e.g., police, probation, prison, and secure hospitals) and has collaborated with various public bodies (e.g., NHS England, Ministry of Justice, Home Office) and charitable organisations (e.g., National Autistic Society) as part of these.
13:45: Working for Justice Group: Experiences in the Criminal Justice System.
The ‘Working for Justice Group’ are an Experts by Experience group. Members have learning disabilities and/or autism, and have experience of the criminal justice system as suspects, defendants or offenders. The group, who is supported by Keyring’s(Tracy Hammond), have provided expert consultancy in the development of seminal reports such as the ‘No One Knows’ and the Bradley Report. They have also won a number of national awards for their work.

14:15: Vicky Sandy-Davis: SOLDA.co.uk app
Vicky is a qualified Positive Behaviour Support coach and a self-harm and suicide assessment trainer. She has worked as a forensic community charge nurse, and a mental impairment community nurse. Vicky has a special interest in the support of people with learning disabilities and autism and with the criminal justice system. She led on the development of the SOLDA interactive learning resource, with the aim of improving the experiences of people with learning disabilities and/or autism in this area of practice.
