Description

An interprofessional team of staff and students from QUB’s Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences (MHLS) provided a ‘Physiology Health Check’ campus event for staff and students during 2023 NI Science Festival week.

In total, 74 participants had a mini health check during this event. The organizing committee were overwhelmed by this positive engagement and uptake at the event.

Student ‘Volunteer Health Assessors’ provided volunteer participants with a range of mini health checks: BMI, Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate, Blood Glucose measurements. Participants received a written report of their results and advice on lifestyle adjustments to maintain optimum physical health. If results were outside the ‘normal’ range, participants were guided to seek medical advice.

Appropriately qualified QUB staff were present at all times to provide expert advice, support and professional oversight of the event.

Since it was part of NISF2023, it is classified as a regional external event, that was supported by Faculty funding awarded through a competitive funding call.

Feedback from students indicates that this external citizenship activity has enriched our students’ learning experience; while verbal endorsement from participants who attended indicate that this outreach event was successful in promoting awareness of health and wellbeing among those who took part.
