Peer Review of Research Ethics Application: Impact of a Simulation Event on the Attitudes and Confidence of Year Two Undergraduate Nursing Students Towards Palliative Care (NAM2128 pilot study)

Activity: Other activity types › Other

Description

Conducted a detailed institutional peer review of a research ethics application submitted by Mrs Emma Magowan, Mrs Oonagh McCloy and Mrs Heather Guttridge (School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast). The study is a quasi-experimental pilot evaluating the impact of a palliative care simulation event on the attitudes and confidence of Year 2 undergraduate nursing students, using the validated FATCOD (Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying) instrument in a pre/post-test design. The review provided detailed written comment across novelty, significance, research team knowledge and understanding, study design and ethical considerations, and value for money, drawing on my clinical background in oncology and palliative/end-of-life care (11 years' clinical experience). The review recommended the project proceed to the initial governance consideration stage, with a suggestion to strengthen the protocol's support provision for students who may experience emotional distress during the simulation.
