Description

Grant holder and a principal organiser of the CBMSE Physiology Friday 2017 Event.

Post primary students from non-selective secondary schools to the CBMSE for an interactive showcase of biomedical sciences as part of Physiology Friday as part of Biology Week being promoted by the Royal Society of Biology and the Physiological Society. The rationale behind the proposal was to promote QUB and the subject areas to sections of the community that are under-represented in Higher Education prior to selecting their GCSE subjects so as to help them make a more informed decision of what subjects they should pick should they want to apply to University to study the related programmes. I was successful in being awarded a competitive grant (£500) by the Physiological Society to support this STEM / Outreach event. As the grant holder I was the academic lead and coordinated staff, manged the budget, contacted schools, devised a timetable and ensured that the resources were in place for the proposed event which occurred on 24th November 2017.

43 Year 10 pupils from non-selective post primary schools from across NI were invited to the CBMSE for an interactive day show casing Anatomy, Physiology and the Research Centres prior to making their GCSE choices. The feedback from students and accompanying teachers has been extremely positive and future plans are to host similar events in the future
