Description

7 April to 15 June 2014 Research Fellowship in the Sociology Department at Rio State University (UERJ), Rio de Janeiro.

The Research Fellowship was funded by the QUB Impact Development Fund. I was hosted by Professor Ignacio Cano from the Sociology Department at the Rio State University (UERJ) and conducted ethnographic research on the use of social media by Rio’s Special Police operations Battalion (BOPE), interviewing BOPE officers and the former Commander of BOPE. I also interviewed the present and former Commander of the Police Pacifying Units (UPPs) on Rio's Community Policing approach. Some of the outcome of this research has been published in Social Semiotics (Mayr, 2015). I also gave the First Joint Seminar between the Media Studies Department at PUC-Rio and Queens (13 and 14 May 2015) on 'Media and Representation' with three colleagues from that Department. The seminar was open to staff and students.
