3 March - 30 June 2015 Visiting Professorship in the Media Studies Department at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC), Brazil

I delivered seminars on linguistic and visual media representations of urban violence and conducted ethnographic research on mainstream and favela photojournalism. With my co-researcher from the Media Studies Department at PUC, I interviewed a number of Rio's foremost (photo)journalists and favela photojournalists on their work, the state of pubic security in Rio, and on Rio's 'new' community policing paradigm and its impact on favelas. We conducted non-participant observation at one Photoschool located in the Mare favela complex, Imagens do Povo and interviewed its directors and some of the photojournalist who trained at that school. Some of this work has been submitted to the journal 'Journalism practice' (May 2016) and is currently being peer-reviewed.
