Description

Santander Mobility Scheme - Research and Teaching visit to PUC University, Rio de Janeiro

The host institution for my three-week teaching and research visit was the Pontífica Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. My activities consisted of a series of lectures and seminars delivered to staff and students in the Departamento do Letras. Both lectures and seminars were based around (Multimodal) Discourse Analysis with a particular emphasis on linguistic and visual media. The sessions involved working through material from both Mayr (2008; 2012a) and Simpson and Mayr (2009), so were research-led. The main linguistic paradigm employed was Systemic Functional Linguistics, which is key teaching and reseach focus in the Departamento do Letras and the School of English at Queens. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen and consolidate the existing institutional teaching and research link already put in place by Professor Paul Simpson, to encourage inward and, in the longer run, outward student mobility- and to foster research collaborations - by attempting to increase staff mobility between the two Schools, thereby promoting a reciprocal partnership between the two institutions and raising Queen’s international profile.
