Description

In 2013, Dr Matt Birch, in collaboration with Orla McAlinden, led the development of a Children’s Nursing Awareness Promotional Video aimed at the general public. The project was designed to raise awareness of the role and value of children’s nursing, promote the School’s children’s nursing programmes, and support broader communication of research and professional practice within the discipline.

Dr Birch played a central role in the creative and pedagogical design of the project, including the production of a detailed storyboard that structured the narrative, visual sequences, and key messages of the film. The storyboard outlined multiple angles—such as “What is Children’s Nursing?”, “Why Pick Queen’s?”, and “School Unique Selling Points”—and incorporated contributions from students and staff, simulation environments, and clinical settings.

This planning ensured that the final video would communicate both the professional realities of children’s nursing and the distinctive educational experience offered by Queen’s University Belfast.

The video served several strategic purposes. As a piece of public outreach, it helped demystify children’s nursing for prospective students, families, and the wider community. As a recruitment resource, it provided an engaging and authentic representation of the programme, featuring student voices, practice environments, and academic expertise. The material also supported research promotion, enabling staff to showcase their work and professional impact through digital channels.

The project contributed to strengthening the School’s digital presence and external engagement at a time of increasing emphasis on multimedia communication. By foregrounding student experience, professional identity, and inclusive representation, the video supported Queen’s University Belfast priorities around widening participation, student recruitment, and community engagement. It aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing access to information about educational opportunities and with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through promotion of the children’s nursing profession and its societal value.
