Description

'EASTER 1916: HISTORY, MEMORY AND MYTH' - DR. FEARGHAL MCGARRY The Embassy of Ireland in Poland is pleased to host a lecture by Dr. Fearghal McGarry of Queen’s University Belfast on ‘Easter 1916: History, Memory and Myth’. Dr. McGarry is a leading historian of modern Ireland. In ‘The Rising: Easter 1916’, Dr. McGarry tells the story of the Easter Rising from the perspective of the ordinary rank-and-file revolutionaries and looks at the wider context of the Rising’s aftermath. In ‘Remembering 1916: The Easter Rising, the Somme and the Politics of Memory in Ireland’ (co-edited with Richard Grayson, March 2016), he examines the two events in 1916 that would profoundly shape both politics and commemoration in Ireland over the course of the following century. Dr. McGarry’s lecture will be followed by a reception. The event will take place in the Embassy Residence. Places are limited and seating is strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. This lecture is part of the Embassy’s 1916 Events Programme.
