I have a specific interest in teaching qualitative research, especially at post-graduate level. Since 2015, I have developed (with colleagues in UU, and more recently, QUB) a suite of workshops that are delivered bi-annually to MSc and PhD researchers. These three workshops enable attendees: 1. to examine ethical issues around qualitative work (in preparation for the submission of their proposal to an ethics committee), and 2: to actually practice interviewing skills in a safe and supportive environment, prior to data gathering (1:1 interviews, dyad interviews and focus group interviews). The third workshop introduces attendees to issues around transcription, reflexivity and data analysis, and so the three workshops together offer attendees an opportunity to learn more deeply, using an active learning approach, about the issues they might encounter in planning and carrying out qualitative research.
