The FMHLS EDI Committee contributes to the overall objective of establishing a transformative staff, student and alumni experience with wellbeing, inclusivity and cultural diversity at the fore.

Report from the SMDBS REC Eiman Abdel Meguid

• Member of QUB EDI Surveys Subgroup. My input was: [i] reviewing the staff and students survey questionnaires; [ii] comms to students to achieve the highest possible response rate; [iii] analysis of survey results, [iv] the dissemination of key survey messages. The result of these surveys will inform our Racial Equity Action Plan and the QUB application to the Racial Equality Charter (2025).

• FMHLS REC subgroup co-lead:
a) Acted as a Panellist during Black History Month Event Oct 2024 for the Diverse Youth NI on the theme “Bridging the gap - Widening participation for Black Ethnic Minority youth in NI”
b) Co-organised an online webinar between the MHLS faculty and the AHSS Faculty titled - Embracing Our Differences: A curiosity-based Conversation (23rd Oct 2024)
c) Delivered a workshop for 38 medical students on Active Bystander Training

• FMHLS subgroup co-lead for Implementing EDI in the curriculum, Diversifying/ decolonising the curriculum. She is a co-Editor of a book formed of 13 chapters whose theme is on Diversifying/decolonising the curriculum that will be published by Springer in 2025. Currently working with the other subgroup members on producing a document to foster inclusion and diversity in the curriculum.

• As a Member of the Operational Group of QUB Path to Sanctuary:
A) Reviewed and contributed to QUB Sanctuary Award Application that is a strategic institutional priority. This application will be submitted within a month as QUB has made a public commitment to becoming University of Sanctuary reflecting our commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.
B) Organised a QUB Sanctuary Coffee Morning Talk (19th March 2025) and invited a speaker “Dr Manal Mahdi” (Gynaecologist) to talk about Women's Health Awareness.
C) Was invited by the Civic Engagement Officer "Dr Federica Ferrieri" to give a Talk "Building a welcoming Belfast" at QUB Coffee Morning Event (5th Feb 2025) together with 2 colleagues. This talk is about Belfast City of Sanctuary history, mission, vision and work and is designed for our migrant neighbours, particularly asylum seekers and refugees.
D) Worked on forging new relationship and expanding the networking with the local Syrian, Sudanese and Egyptian Communities to exemplify our university's commitment in addressing key societal issues, promoting mental health support, fostering inclusion and supporting marginalised communities to continue our journey towards creating a more equitable and welcoming environment.
E) Regularly update the Belfast City of Sanctuary on QUB progress towards the Sanctuary mission.

• Speaker at the REC & iRise Academic Progression Workshop that is designed to support colleagues from Black, Asian, minority ethnic and international backgrounds who are considering applying for promotion (Jan 2025).

• Invited Imam Ameer Ibrahim (Dunmurry Mosque) (21st Nov 2025) to talk about the Islamic views on Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia in a Student Selected Component for the 2nd year medical students “MURDER OR MERCY".

Met with the Lord Mayor of Belfast “Councillor Micky Murray “at Belfast City Hall (26th Nov 2024) to request support on some issues related to my role as an Executive Member of Belfast City of Sanctuary (BCOS) Management Committee in providing supporting for people seeking sanctuary and addressing inequalities and support communities and individuals in our neighbourhood
