Description

Met with Lord Mayor Micky Murray to discuss initiatives aimed at making Belfast a welcoming and inclusive city for all residents.  I advocatied for strengthened civic support for refugees and asylum seekers through the Belfast City of Sanctuary initiative, while highlighting QUB’s ongoing commitment to support sanctuary seekers and promote inclusion.” it was a celebration of Welcome and Hope Event.

Key Discussion Points: Presentation of Belfast City of Sanctuary’s vision to officially designate Belfast as a City of Sanctuary, highlighting the social, cultural, and economic benefits of such recognition, overview of community engagement activities, including support services and educational outreach, opportunities for collaboration between Belfast City Council and the Sanctuary movement to enhance support structures, the importance of civic leadership and partnership in championing policies that protect and empower refugees and asylum seekers. Discussion on the next steps, including public awareness and the role of the City Council in endorsing the City of Sanctuary designation were key points.

Outcome: The Lord Mayor expressed strong support for the initiative and recognised the critical role the Council can play in promoting sanctuary. Agreement happened to continue dialogue and establish a working relationship to advance the City of Sanctuary.
